Rooibos. Say it with us: ROY-bos. The word is Afrikaans, and it means simply, “red bush.” The rooibos bush grows in exactly one place in the world: South Africa – and specifically in a small mountainous region of South Africa’s Western Cape province.
If you were to see a rooibos bush, you might think it rather resembles a broom, with its pointed, needle-like leaves. In fact, those leaves point to a whole new world of possibilities for what a tea can be.
For generations, South Africans have used the leaves to make an herbal red tea – or bush tea, as they know it. Red tea made from rooibos is high in antioxidants, free of caffeine and packed with flavor. South Africans will also tell you rooibos can help to calm nervous tension, lessen allergies and aid digestive problems. They’ve also traditionally used it to treat baby colic, asthma symptoms and dermatological issues.
But more than being good for your body, rooibos is good for your senses, too. Rooibos has low tannin levels, meaning it lacks bitterness. Brewing in small batches, we further enhance the sweet character of rooibos with organic fruits, herbs and spices, creating five supremely joyful tea experiences.
